There’s bazilion web frameworks out there and there will always be one, that would fix your current problem right away. Unfortunately, it’s not one you’re using.

Hey Victory,

I have been fortunate enough to find your blog via a tip off and am enjoying it on my reader! I've been waiting to hear someone, anyone, make a case for using php frameworks. Often I imagine what it would be like, and have hints of imaginations, but never could really grasp it.

I'm month 7 into developing a beast of a program and its these days that I see that many of my modules resemble each other, and could be modified versions of a parent module-- as well as find myself visiting 5 different files to include one additional database field and variable input. It's these days that wonder if this is what a framework could help me with.

truth be told, i started to use emacs, but split tested with vim, and chose the latter because the keybindings suited me better. *shrugs*

Thanks Leeward!

I am shocked that my blog made someone choose vim, i am an avid, avid emacs user, if you want to use it in the terminal you can do `emacs -nw` I am speechless.

I do use vim for quick edits, i use it pretty much daily but, still as a main work horse emacs is the way.

Then again you choose Django over Pylons so maybe you like having that "out of the box" feeling, that's cool too.

For some reason i have a way i think things should work and i want the freedom to make them work that way if i so choose.

Thanks again for reading :D

Cool story, bro :) I love the blog, been reading since your fourth post (on automation tools). We've got similar style; I'm using ubuntu/python/django most of the time, and that post inspired me to switch to Vim (from Aptana) for the pleasure of using a terminal based editor.

I'm starting a new project with my friend right now, and I'm on the fence as to whether I should use a PHP framework for this -- We've got domainA.com on a pre-built social platform already functioning as we like, and we're launching domainB.com as a sister site with a single, unified login. It looks like most of the work will just be integrating the API, so I think I'm gonna opt to do this frankenstein style, but still, your post gave me a lot of good pros/cons to weight out about the matter :)

Cheers, keep the good content coming!

I started a wiki site (http://ThePetWiki.com) not that long ago, and I've been able to grow the content nicely from a few dedicated users. It's been hard trying to figure out how to increase the number of contributor. I look forward to trying some of your techniques. Thanks!

I like especially the last one. But probably you need something publish to let the profile page rank. Yet, this seems a good idea to me to (mini)site monetization: sell the content of your site/blog as print. I have some which could do that maybe. Did you try it?

@Andy - good idea - to catch false positives without losing comments.

I figured you'd use JS for this, but a lot of bots don't even run javascript or they could purposely disable it, e.g. with Ubot you can disable javascript in IE.

How about storing info in the PHP session? you could time the different between page load and form submission as that's a sure-fire way to detect comment spam.

Well, yeah the thing is that there less sophisticated users who are linking _to_ you, and when they do, they occasionally add punctuation to the end of urls.

Granted you can look through your logs to find these 404 problems, but the method i show in this post is more handy IMHO.

If nothing else, that redirect unit testing coding code is very handy.
